Stockholm is the oldest Swedish settlement in western Wisconsin, founded in 1851 by a group of immigrants from Karlskoga, Sweden. Eric and Jacob Peterson original founders of the village considered many names but settled on Stockholm-on-Lake-Pepin, in honor of Stockholm-on-Lake-Malaren, capital of their home country.

The many historic buildings in the village are a reminder of days gone by when Stockholm was a commercial hub for farmers and the center for fishing, clamming and even ice, which was cut from the lake and shipped all over the country. Stockholm residents are proud of their heritage and reputation as a quaint, charming river town, situated along one of the most beautiful routes in the nation. During the ‘70’s many artists were drawn to the area by the region’s stunning beauty and began to revive many of the old storefronts and homes. Galleries, shops and café’s soon followed. Today, the village is a thriving community brimming with charming shops, world class local and regional fine art, a quaint museum, delectable food and premier accommodations.

The village is host to the annual Stockholm Art Fair, which has been held for more than 30 years, on the 3rd Saturday of July. You will discover over a hundred juried artists set in the beautiful village park and thousands of art lovers strolling the streets. In the spring and fall the artists of the area open their studios for the art tours. Less than a mile from the village sits Maiden Rock Bluff, site of a Dakota maiden’s legendary leap to avoid a forced marriage. The bluff and over two hundred surrounding acres were preserved forever in 2004, providing public access to unique Mississippi River Valley habitat and some of the most stunning views on the Great River.

And don’t forget a visit to the shores of Lake Pepin at the beautiful Village Park with a campground or take a walk down the 700 foot stone pier into the midst of the mighty Mississippi River. Stockholm on the Mississippi – Close to home... but worlds away.
