About Red Wing

Like many other small towns on the frontier, Red Wing rode the waves of prosperity. Unlike some of the others, however, it had the elasticity to bounce back after the crashes. In part, this was due to its charmed location. Set on bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River and an hour south of Minneapolis/St. Paul, this former wheat shipping port attracts outdoorsy types and architecture buffs alike.

Its downtown is filled with restored buildings, including the ornate Sheldon Performing Arts Theatre where you can catch plays and country bands. Rooms in the Italianate 130 year old restored St. James Hotel contain handmade quilts and are named after old river boats that once traveled the mighty Mississippi.
